Q&A with Georgetown Cupcake

Georgetown Cupcake Buckhead InteriorThe Mandarin Oriental, Atlanta, is lucky to call several of Atlanta’s top retailers and restaurants our partners. Georgetown Cupcake opened in Buckhead Atlanta in March, and business has been booming. The company is owned by sisters Katherine Kallinis Berman and Sophie Kallinis LaMontagne, and they were also the stars of “DC Cupcakes” on TLC. We recently spoke with Katherine and Sophie about why they decided to open a store in Atlanta and what sets them apart from the cupcake competition.

Why did Georgetown Cupcakes choose Atlanta for its sixth location?

Sophie and Katherine: We decided to expand Georgetown Cupcake to Atlanta for several reasons. First, we personally LOVE Atlanta and have many family and friends in the city! Second, since we ship our cupcakes nationwide, we can see where our cupcakes are being shipped, and Atlanta was one of the most popular shipping destinations for our cupcakes. So, we decided to bring our cupcakes a little closer to all of fans here. Atlanta is such a beautiful and fun city and we are so excited to be here!

What sets Georgetown Cupcakes apart from other cupcake chains?

Sophie and Katherine: Since we first opened Georgetown Cupcake seven years ago in Washington, D.C., we’ve always kept the same baking philosophy. We bake our cupcakes fresh daily and use the very best ingredients – from European Style butter to Madagascar Bourbon vanilla to Valrhona cocoa and Callebaut chocolate to fresh fruits. When we use the very best ingredients, they shine through in our cupcakes. We also pride ourselves in offering customized cupcake decorations for our customers for both corporate and social events, beautiful packaging and exceptional customer service.BuckheadGarden3

Are there any flavors/special items specific to the Atlanta store?

Sophie and Katherine: When we first opened our Atlanta store in Buckhead, we celebrated with special “Atlanta Peach” cupcakes and offered them at all of our locations. We will be bringing back our Peach cupcakes to our Atlanta store again this summer. We also give away 100 free cupcakes each day as our “secret” off-the-menu flavor. If you follow Georgetown Cupcake on Twitter, you can find out the free flavor of the day each morning, and come in and get it for free! It’s our way to say “thank you” to our neighbors and regular customers.

Are you participating in any upcoming events at the Mandarin Oriental, Atlanta?

Sophie and Katherine: We love partnering with the Mandarin Oriental in Atlanta and had so much fun participating in its recent Family Day event! We look forward to working with the hotel on many future events.

A Living Art Gallery

BlignautArt is an important element of the interior design at The Mandarin Oriental, Atlanta. The rotating art collection brings elements of surprise and delight to the hotel, enticing guests and residents to return to see what’s new. A partnership with Buckhead’s Bill Lowe Gallery allows the hotel to maintain a diverse, ever-changing array of art, all of which is available for purchase. This is especially important for busy residents who might not have time to frequent galleries, and can instead see and purchase some of the best art in Atlanta, curated by a top gallery, without ever leaving the building.

Bill Lowe Gallery, with locations in Atlanta and Los Angeles, specializes in contemporary art, and is internationally renowned for its curatorial skills. The art on display in the hotel changes periodically, and the current collection includes Mythical Pilgrimage by South African artist Daniel Blignaut (pictured) and local Atlanta artists Ellen DeLoach and Karen Schwartz. Other current stand-out pieces include Jung Kwang Sik’s Evolving Earth, a work of painted, carved granite, and two untitled oil paintings by Italian artist Alfredo Bovio Di Giovanni.
